Minister of Education Carlos Amarante Baret has urged members of parents associations to send their children to school from Monday, 19 August, the official start of the 2013-2014 school year. Traditionally parents have sent their children a week later and they end up losing a whole week of classes. The minister is hoping that a media campaign to change the usual practice of starting late will result in all children starting school on time.
He announced that 300 new classrooms have been added this year. Overall 2.6 million students are registered to start school on Monday. Minister Amarante announced that all-day programs would be implemented at 397 public schools nationwide. He said President Medina would be at the Teresa de Calcuta High School in Monte Llano, Puerto Plata to celebrate the start of the new school year.
