An article in today’s Listin Diario, Monday 19 August gives readers a list of Trujillo-era police chiefs together with a list of the post-Trujillo holders of that powerful office. The essence of the article is to underline the changes in the leadership of the National Police, which supposedly has 54 generals, and where the men and women with the rank of colonel are coming to the forefront. The article points out that most top police posts are now held by colonels, most of whom have replaced generals in the same position. These posts include Human Resources, Narcotics, Legal Affairs, Internal Affairs, Criminal Intelligence, Social Security, Police Reform, regional commands, the Auxiliary Police and Telematics – the computer center, IT and related areas. One interesting aspect of the article is that a comparison between the list of police chiefs during Trujillo’s regime with some of the most privileged figures in Santo Domingo’s industry, commerce, and politics shows some curious correlations.
