Martinez calls for review of Haitian treaties

The president of the Dominican Chamber of Deputies has told Diario Libre that some of the agreements signed with Haiti need to be reviewed. After describing the issue as delicate, the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Abel Martinez said that the international agreements signed by the governments of Haiti and the Dominican Republic should be reviewed in order to update them to the current commercial relations.

He said that he has been following the differences with the neighboring nation and the ban on various local products, but that in this case it was necessary to act with moderation so as not to affect the government. “I’m aware that there are initiatives by the Dominican state and Haiti for readjusting these relations, and we, from the Chamber of Deputies, want to support President Danilo Medina and his administration in redefining the relations between both states.” Martinez said that he has always argued for bi-lateral relations to be respectful, especially for preserving the dignity of the country and that of the Haitian people. “What we could outline clearly and precisely is the scope of our commercial relations,” which he feels would be ideal in this case.
