Visual Arts Biennial opens

Art critics are describing the 27th National Visual Arts Biennial as an event that is promoting new talent in the Dominican Republic. This year the big cash prizes were mainly distributed among artists creating performance art.

The leading arts exhibition opened at the Museum of Modern Art on Friday, 16 August. It is dedicated to the late Domingo Liz, best known for his drawings.

This year’s winners are: Joiri Alphonsina Minaya Feliz for her video, Metonimia and her performance, “Satisfied.” She received a RD$500,000 cash prize.

Winners of the eight runners up RD$250,000 cash prizes are:

Engel Stalin Leonardo Bello and Laura Michelle Castro Matos for their installation “Modern Tropical”, Ariadna Margarita Canaan Rivas, for her installation “House of Stones”, Luis Ernesto Arias Perez, for his installation “Cibercity 3001”, and Citially Miranda Perez, for her photography “Session with Salome”. Angel Gonzalez Urrelly won a prize for his drawing “Deforestation: from the Jungle to Botanicals”, Patricia Castillo for her installation “Low Vibrations”, Polibio Diaz Quiroz for his video “Maniest” and Julianny Zaira Ariza Volquez for the installation “From the Series Well Being No. 1”

Honorable mentions were given to works presented by Jonnathan Sanchez, Miguel Ramirez, Natalia Ortega, Pascal Meccariello, Jose Cestero, Jose Pion, Dario Scapellato, Pancho Rodriguez, Eliazar Ortiz, Luis Hidalgo and Dalton Gata Garcia.

The Biennial will be open through November 2013. The jurors were Chus Martinez, Quisqueya Henriquez and Bingene Armenteros who selected the winners from over 500 works presented.
