DR wins U17 Centrobasket

The winning team of the Gold Medal U17 Centrobasket tournament returned to the country last night, Monday 19 August to participate in local celebrations. Rafael Uribe, president of the Dominican Basketball Federation, says that the future of the DR is in those boys.

The DR under-17 youth team clinched the gold medal at the tournament held in Puerto Rico after defeating host Puerto Rico 85-58 on Sunday, 18 August. Yerri Flores posted 18 points to lead the winners. It was an exciting last game. The Dominican team is coached by Jose (Maita) Mercedes and averaged 41 points above the competition. Uribe said that nine of the 12 team members have received scholarships to study in US high schools and continue their training.

The DR competed against teams from Puerto Rico, Mexico, US Virgin Islands, Bahamas, El Salvador, British Virgin Islands and Costa Rica.

The DR, Puerto Rico and Mexico qualified for the 2014 FIBA Americas U18 Championship.
