Funds for late issue of birth certificates

The Central Electoral Board (JCE) has received a check for RD$1,293,165 from the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) to continue the project to issue birth certificates to around 6,000 children identified by the Ministry of Education.

The beneficiaries live in Pedro Brand, several neighborhoods along the edge of the Ozama River such as Borojol, La Fuente, La Cienaga, El Arrosal, Guachupita, Los Guandules, 24 of April, Gualey and other poor areas of the capital.

Eduardo Gallardo of Unicef delivered the check to the JCE president, Roberto Rosario Marquez, who was accompanied by Dolores Fernandez, director of the Civil Registry and Brigida Sabino, director of Late Registrations.

Eduardo Gallardo said the project was aimed at formalizing a support process to register children to give them to opportunity to advance in their education, for which they need a birth certificate.

The funds are for the second phase of a program already underway. Listin Diario reports that in the first phase (October 2011 to August 2012), more than three million pesos were spent on providing birth certificates to students at schools in San Pedro de Macoris, Hato Mayor, La Romana and Monte Plata. Three schools were visited, 3,066 cases were identified and 2,116 birth certificates were issued.
