The Body Shop gym in Naco, Santo Domingo will be hosting the First Grand 1 Million Meters Swimathon from Friday 23 August starting at 6pm to Saturday, 24 August at 6pm. The event is a benefit for Televida, Channel 41, the Roman Catholic Church television station. Monsignor Victor Masalles, a former swimmer himself who set a national record swimming 50km nonstop on 2 February 1980, is the leading organizer of the event. Masalles was also a member of the Dominican Republic swimming team that competed in the Puerto Rico Pan Am Games in 1979. Masalles said the event seeks to bring forth the best national values. The goal is to swim one million meters nonstop in 16 hours to break the record set by the Caimanes del Caribe swim team in 1980. Local swimmer Miguel Portes also seeks to break the individual record of 60km nonstop swimming set by Marcos Diaz in 2004.
