Consumer confidence up

Consumer confidence in the economy has increased since June 2013. A recent poll conducted by Gallup Dominicana commissioned by the Ministry of Economy, Planning and Development found that 64% of consumers trust their current economic situation will improve. This is the highest number of optimism in the last five years. Consumers gave 103 points to their hopes for improvements over the next 12 months.

“Both in the assessment of the current situation as well as the assessment of expectations, confidence levels were higher in Greater Santo Domingo and the non-touristic parts of the country compared to the levels of confidence in Santiago and the touristic parts of the country, respectively,” says the report.

Respondents’ assessment of the labor market reached 80 points, an increase of 13 points compared to October 2012. There is optimism that employment opportunities will increase and even more so over the next 12 months. The number of people who have an optimistic outlook about the possibility of savings has also grown, now reaching 63 points. The survey was conducted from 5 June to 19 June and the sample consisted of 1,979 interviews taken in homes.
