Resignation of five judges is worrisome

The recent resignation of five long-term judges because of the low wages they received, has become a truly worrisome problem for the Justice Department. The Institutionalism and Justice Foundation (Finjus) and the former president of the Dominican Lawyers’ Association, Diego Jose Garcia, have expressed their concern at the situation. Finjus said that it implies that processes are developing within the Judicial Branch that could put important reforms in jeopardy. Finjus noted that the judges’ letters of resignation appear to indicate that it was impossible to live an exemplary life on the scale required by the law on the current salary levels. The resignation of these judges represents the loss of well over 50 years of experience at both national and international levels, as well as the loss of the training and educational programs in which they played an important part.
