Legislators approve funds to finish eastern highway

The Chamber of Deputies approved loans for US$263.3 million yesterday, 21 August 2013 to complete road works linking Santo Domingo to the southeast of the country. The works are carried out by the Brazilian company Odebrecht.

The legislators approved a loan for US$80,200,000 from the Central American Economic Integration Bank (BCIE) that will be used to finance the completion of the expressway between San Pedro de Macoris and La Romana, and the La Romana bypass to complete the Touristic Boulevard of the East.

The legislators also approved another loan for US$90,917,678 to complete the work from Cap Cana to Punta Cana International Airport, and to widen the highway from San Pedro de Macoris to La Romana.

A third contract is for the completion of the San Pedro de Macoris-La Romana expansion, a contract signed for US$82,190,785.61.

The expanded roadway system is aimed at reducing driving time from Santo Domingo to Punta Cana to two hours and making driving safer.
