Santiago public transport drivers protest

Drivers on 25 public transport routes in Santiago, affiliated to the FENTTRARENO transport union stopped work for several hours yesterday, Wednesday 21 August as they protested over the increase in fuel prices.

Drivers assembled in front of the Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration from 8am and marched through Las Carreras Avenue, and a large police presence kept an eye on the demonstration, according to the Cibao Regional Police Chief, General Perez Sanchez, to ensure that order was maintained.

The drivers also called on the government to deliver the diesel and gas subsidy and to change the Hydrocarbon Law. FENTTRARENO president Gervasio De La Rosa complained that 90% of the urban transport drivers did not receive the fuel subsidy or the pensions they were entitled to.
