Public transport by boat along the Ozama River?

Public transport services on the Ozama River are planned as part of the La Barquita urban renewal project, reports Diario Libre today, Friday 23 August. Domingo Contreras, a member of the private-government committee entrusted with the relocation and recovery of the riverside area, says that they are planning to create seven stops for commuters that could connect with the Santo Domingo Metro and the bridges that cross to the eastern side of Greater Santo Domingo, all the way down to the sea-fronting Malecon.

As reported in Diario Libre, the families that are being relocated from La Barquita will be moved to blocks of four-floor buildings with around 2,000 apartments, with public spaces, a high school and other services near the El Cachon de la Rubia park area.

Contreras says that the project is intended to serve as a model for the rescue of riverside areas nationwide. He said that residents in La Barquita could be employed in the construction work.

Contreras says that there will not be construction in the park area of El Cachon de la Rubia. He said the area would be preserved as a park with 256,000 square meters.
