Armed Forces will patrol streets “as long as necessary”

Armed Forces Minister Admiral Sigfrido Pared Perez has reiterated his commitment for active participation in the Public Safety Plan, “as long as necessary”. He said that some 4,000 agents were currently supporting the security program. According to Listin Diario, the minister was interviewed for the “Reporters for a year” program sponsored by the newspaper. He was asked about the unprecedented number of deaths on “Bloody Thursday” and the losses suffered by the armed forces. He stated that while none of the Army patrols has lost any men, such statistics were the province of the National Police and the Attorney General of the Republic. The admiral also stressed that the participants in the joint patrols have all taken part in courses at the Higher Defense Institute emphasizing human rights, police techniques and non-belligerent tactics.
