Miguel Alberto Portes set four national records during the celebration of the Swimathon (1 million meters) at the Body Shop Naco pool over the weekend of 24-25 August. The event was organized by the Ladies Volunteers of Televida, the Roman Catholic Church TV station. The 21-year old broke the 50 kilometers in 11:56 swim in a pool record set by Marcos Diaz in 2002. He swam the distance in 11:38 minutes. He also broke the 50km marathon record set by Victor Masalles, now the Assistant Bishop of the Santo Domingo Archidiocese. The new record is 53km in 12 hours of swimming. The swimmer also set a record of 60km in 14:05 minutes. The previous record was 14:50 set in 2002 by Marcos Diaz, as reported in Hoy.
