Both Santiago and the capital have high degree of seismic risk

Santiago has a higher degree of risk only because it is located in an area of high seismic activity, according to Hoy reporter Leonela Ramirez. The reporter said that the Colonial City in Santo Domingo is the sector of the National District most at risk from hurricanes or earthquakes. This conclusion is found in a study called “Natural Threats and Risks in the Dominican Republic” by the National Department for Organization and Territorial Development (DGODT). According to the report the Colonial City is where the most fatalities and injuries could occur in case of a serious natural disaster. Another area listed in the study was Centro de los Heroes, where there is a combination of public and private buildings. A total of 34 barrios were classified as high, medium or low-risk areas. The barrios at very high risk are San Diego, Domingo Savio and La Zurza, because of problems of overcrowding, poverty and a lack of public spaces. Several other barrios in Santo Domingo were considered to be “high risk” for the same reasons – such as Gualey, Capotillo and La Isabela n for the same reasons: Overcrowded living conditions, and a lack of parks, or parking lots which could be used in times of need.
