The Roman Catholic Church in Santo Domingo has no comments on the reasons for the resignation of Apostolic Nuncio Emeritus Josef Wesolowski on 21 August 2013. Wesolowski has not been available for comment either. Diario Libre reporters who called the Apostolic Nunciature were told that Wesolowski left the country last week. The 65-year old Polish archbishop had been in the Dominican Republic since 2008.
Acento.com.do compiles some information and videos that link the priest to Father Wojciech (better known as Alberto Gil), the priest who fled the country when the Dominican judiciary summoned him for an investigation into child sexual molestation in his Juncalito parish in Santiago province. The prosecutor of Santiago, following instructions of Judge Luisa Liranzo, had issued an order of arrest for Wojciech in June 2013.
Acento reports that on 4 June 2013 the Codigo Calle show, on Teleuniverso, a Santiago-based television station, aired a report: “Power and abuse behind the priest robes” on Channel 29. One of the interviewees was Pedro Espinal, a former mayor who spoke about the trip that the now fugitive Father Wojciech had organized to Juan Dolio in San Pedro de Macoris where the Nuncio Wesolowski was the host at a villa. Children and teenagers from the parish of Juncalito, Wesolowski and Espinal were at the villa.
