The government has started teaching more than 3,000 inmates to read in jails around the country as part of the “Quisqueya Learns with You” National Literacy Plan.
The inaugural event took place yesterday, Wednesday 28 August, at La Victoria jail and was headed by the Minister for the Presidency Gustavo Montalvo and Attorney General Francisco Dominguez Brito.
The Minister pledged that from now on there would not be one single inmate who did not know how to read and write.
He said that the peaceful revolution that is taking place in the area of education would not leave out people who did not have their freedom as they had the same right to literacy as everyone else. Dominguez Brito said that the challenge would be to teach all inmates to read and write.
Also present were Fr. Aristides Jimenez Richardson, who gave the blessing, Santo Domingo provincial Senator Cristina Lizardo, Governor Juan Frias, Santo Domingo North Mayor Francisco Fernandez, and others.
