The National Consumer Rights Protection Institute (Pro Consumidor) has taken at least 82,894 products off the shelves in the provinces of Hato Mayor, Azua and San Juan de la Maguana. ProConsumidor says that the products that represent a health hazard include ham, soda, cranberry juice, energy drinks, evaporated milk, corn, liquid soap, cat food, pasta, salami, sausages, mushrooms, capers, Chinese chips, tomato cocktail, wine, oil vinegar, liquid seasoning, margarine, carbonated water, soy sauce, garlic paste, tortillas, taco sauce, peas, disinfectant, sweet peas, seasoning, cornflour, Worcestershire sauce, sardines, cocoa, chicken stock, garlic stock cubes, coconut water, iced tea, mayonnaise, cereal, baby cream and formula.
ProConsumidor said that the products were out of date, the cans were in a poor condition with dents or rust, and some products had been contaminated with rat urine.
