Young people innovate at INTEC high tech fair

With this year’s focus on innovating with electricity, students from the Institute of Technology of Santo Domingo (INTEC) are showing off their creative talents and ingenuity and inviting the general public to see the exhibits at the Intecnologia 2013 Fair. The students are also seeking to contribute to business and industrial development in finding new solutions to social and economic problems.

Fair general coordinator Anne Tejada says that “energy is an issue that affects us all, regardless of profession and where you live or how you live, it’s a problem for everyone”.

One exhibit is a SAEC, an automated energy efficiency system for measuring and monitoring home or business energy consumption from a smartphone or tablet. Others include the Nutridogs packaging line that fills and seals dog food, and the Step Energy device that converts physical energy into power.

But energy was not the only area addressed by the students. The inventions on display at the fair also include the Auto-tender, a vending serving machine that serves drinks in glasses and could replace the work of waiters or bartenders.

Tejada says that one of the projects presented in the 2012 fair was the winner of the National Business Plan Competition organized by the Ministry of Education. The winner received seed capital for RD$100,000 to complete the project that monitors brain activity to prevent drivers from falling asleep at the wheel. The device is now being tested.
