Going beyond the perception around President Danilo Medina

El Dia news commentator Victor Bautista writes today, Monday 2 September on how President Danilo Medina has chosen to focus on the extreme poor to mark a difference between him and his predecessor President Leonel Fernandez, who was frequently criticized for being too remote. Bautista warns, however, that the weekly “surprise” visits could become tiresome and the nation needs firm signals that several main structural problems are being solved. He mentions public safety, the electricity crisis, institutional weaknesses, creation of quality jobs, labor reform, restructuring the Ministry of Foreign Relations, making doing business easier, export strategy, attracting investment and competitiveness.

“These things will not happen by themselves or by spontaneous generation,” he comments. He says they need a government with a daring team that focuses on building a true legacy based on a strategy that he is not seeing.
