Dominican Mormon missionary killed

A Dominican missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving in Colombia was shot and killed by a stray bullet on Saturday, 31 August, church officials have confirmed.

Jose Daniel Encarnacion Montero, 20, was in his apartment in Cali with three other Mormon missionaries n a Bolivian, an American and an Ecuadorian, when he was hit by a stray bullet, according to LDS Church spokeswoman Ruth Todd. The other missionaries were unharmed and the incident is currently being investigated by local police.

According to press reports in Colombia, after initially saying that his death was due to a stray bullet, the police are now also investigating the possibility of murder.

“Elder Encarnacion’s passing will be deeply felt in the mission and by all who knew him,” Todd said in a statement.

His body will be repatriated to the Dominican Republic today, Tuesday 3 or tomorrow, Wednesday 4 September.
