Jose Miguel Gonzalez Cuesta, president of the Commission for the Relocation of La Barquita Residents says that it was decided that the slum area dwellers will not be relocated to the Cachon de la Rubia environmental reserve area, but to Sabana Perdida, on the other side of the Ozama River. Speaking at the Presidential Palace, Gonzalez said that the park area would not be affected. He said that the current La Barquita site would become an extension of the Cachon de la Rubia Park. Construction to enable the relocation of the slum dwellers is expected to begin in three months. The project involves the construction of 2,000 homes, due for completion by 16 August 2016, when the Medina administration ends. The first homes would be delivered in 2014.
