According to Public Works Minister Gonzalo Castillo, the construction of around 28 schools is now underway and another 142 will start in two weeks. This has happened since President Danilo Medina met with the owners of the land on Friday, 30 August and broke the impasse that was preventing construction of the schools where school hours will be extended to all day long.
Castillo said that everything is now going well with the Ministry of Education and the payments are being made to the engineers.
However, he admitted that some landowners have still not given permission for building work to start on their land until agreement on price has been reached, although he said that they believed the President when he assured them that they would be paid.
He said that he hoped that 70 schools would be ready by the end of this month and possibly by the end of October or the beginning of November they would start the tendering process for the other 10,000 classrooms.
