Last night, Wednesday 4 September, the Boston Red Sox smothered the Detroit Tigers, 20-4, in a game in which designator hitter David Ortiz of the Red Sox hit two homeruns and a double. The first homerun gave Boston a lead in what was then a tight game. Then came a two-run double off of the center field wall, which would normally have been just another hit for Ortiz, the premier batter in the American League. However, this one was special because it was the 2,000th hit of his great career. Overall, on a great night, the Boston slugger accounted for a quarter of the team’s homeruns. Ortiz received a wild, standing ovation from the adoring Boston crowd of over 32,000.
