More police on the streets

Speaking at a ceremony yesterday, Tuesday 10 September, as the United States embassy was handing over US$100,000 in equipment donations, the chief of the National Police, Major General Manuel Castro Castillo announced that 1,000 new police officers will be on the streets by the end of the month as part of the second phase of the Citizen Security Plan.

He said that they would be assigned where they are most needed and where crime is highest. Castro Castillo confirmed that in its first phase, crime had reduced by 43% in the areas where the plan has been operating and there was a larger police presence across the National District.

The equipment being donated by the US Embassy includes 175 bulletproof vests, night vision cameras, computers and other technological equipment that will help the National Police in their work to improve the safety of their staff and to rebuild the technological platform of their information systems.

Castro Castillo thanked the US Embassy for the donation and pledged to use it in the fight against drug dealing and crime.
