Lack of supervision might make new classrooms less safe

According to engineer Leonardo Reyes Madera, “if we continue to build like this, many of the new schools will not withstand a large earthquake.” Such a chilling statement from a prominent engineer reflects the fact that although the new schools were designed according to the Ministry of Public Works Seismic Analysis and Structural Design Regulations, in reality, the lack of supervision has meant that these standards have been set aside in the construction process. According to El Caribe, engineers like Reyes Madera who have a background in seismology, are “seeing …that they are repeating the same mistakes of the past and what we will have at the end are schools similar and equal to those that we have now, which during any event of a minor magnitude suffer serious damage.”
