The executive vice president of the State Electricity Companies (CDEEE), Ruben Jimenez Bichara says that the addition of new coal-fired generating plants would eliminate the energy deficit that affects the country and leads to long blackouts.
Jimenez Bichara said that that the two new 300-megawatt coal-fired plants would be built on the coast between Bani and Azua as soon as possible using the very latest technology and with the least possible effect on the environment.
The project in Punta Catalina, Hatillo will be part of the United Nations Clean Development Program, using technology to reduce emissions compared to the older, less efficient plants.
During a meeting with authorities and community representatives from Peravia province, the Ministry of the Environment and the National Council for Climate Change and Clean Development, CDEEE technicians outlined the pollution reduction methods and the benefits to the country.
Luis Manuel Pimentel, from the Banilejo Development Foundation has expressed concern about potential damage to nature and to farming in the area. He was assured this would not be the case.
