Spain Celebrates Spanish Weeks in DR

The Embassy of Spain, Casa de Espana and the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in the Dominican Republic are helping organize an ambitious program of events to celebrate the presence of Spain in the Dominican Republic. The event is to be known as “The Weeks of Spain in the Dominican Republic.” It will take place in the weeks before and after the celebration of the 12 October, Columbus Day. The events are scheduled from 25 September to 28 October.

The celebrations open on 25 September with flamenco performance at the Blue Mall. The city mall will also be exhibiting posts in honor of Las Soledades de Gongora.

Several large food stores, including La Sirena, Bravo and La Cadena, owned by Spaniards, will be offering special promotions of Spanish imports from 30 September to 15 October.

A photography exhibition will open at the Centro Cultural de Espana in the Colonial City on 3 October with Ouka Leela’s “Transgressional Utopia” with several of her works.

On 5 October, Palacio de Bellas Artes will present, “Dios menguante” a performance by the Mar Gomez dance company.

Other events are the Hispanidad Regatta set for 4 and 6 October, the Hispanidad Golf Tournament at the Metro Country Club in Juan Dolio.

There will be a tasting of Spanish wines at the Bellapart Museum for visitors to an exhibition of nine artists of Spanish origin.

The Cinemateca Nacional is holding a week of great Spanish cinema from 16-22 October, and Novocentro will be screening some of the best of contemporary Spanish films at its Fine Arts Cinema from 23-28 October.
