Boy dies of rabies

An eight-year old boy died of rabies in the Robert Reid Cabral hospital on Monday 23 September after being bitten by a dog last December.

The boy only had symptoms for eight days before he died and lived in Maguana Arriba, a rural area in the province of San Juan de la Maguana. Doctors confirmed that his grandmother had rushed him to the local primary health center after being bitten by his neighbor’s dog. He was then referred to the public hospital in San Juan de la Maguana where they said there was no need to vaccinate until seeing the behavior of the dog, which subsequently died. Hence the child was not vaccinated.
