The Minister for Foreign Relations Carlos Morales Troncoso is reported to be in the United States undergoing leukemia treatment. He is taking a leave of absence from his responsibilities at the Ministry of Foreign Relations.
The Ministry said in a statement that the illness was treatable as it had been discovered at a very early stage and his doctors were confident of a successful outcome to the treatment.
The cancer was detected during a routine medical check when the Minister was in the United States for the General Assembly of the United Nations.
During his absence Deputy Minister Jose Manuel Trullols will take over his role.
