Chinese business mission meets President Medina

The Chinese business mission to the DR to attend the Chinese Trade Show underway at the Dominican Fiesta convention center met with President Danilo Medina at the Presidential Palace yesterday, Thursday 26 September. Yu Ping, vice president of the Chinese International Trade Promotion Council said that 87 representatives from the Chinese companies that are participating in the Fifth People’s Republic of China Trade Exhibition.

Dominican trade representative in China, Rosa Ng Baez said that the visitors are exploring business opportunities in a range of industrial areas. She said the mission is proof that China wants to invest in the DR even without diplomatic relations. The DR has diplomatic relations with Taiwan, which has been an obstacle to establishing full diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China. Both countries maintain trade offices in the DR.

More than 40 companies, including many large manufacturers are exhibiting at the Fifth People’s Republic of China Trade Exhibition in Santo Domingo. The event, which started yesterday, Thursday 26 September, continues at the Hotel Dominican Fiesta until Sunday 29 September. Six cities or provinces in China are represented: Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqin, Shandong, Zhejiang, Guangdong. Automobiles, motorcycles, electronics, hardware and light industrial products are on display. Talks and business roundtable discussions are taking place at the event, which is being organized by the Center for Export and Investment (CEI-RD and the Chinese International Trade Promotion Council, and the Dominican ministries of Economy and Foreign Relations. China is the Dominican Republic’s third largest trading partner after the United States and Haiti.
