Heritage director calls for stop to Colonial City works

Sections of the old walls of Santo Domingo could be destroyed as a result of the renovation work underway in the Colonial City. The director of the Department of Monumental Heritage, Edda Grullon is criticizing the builders working on the improvements for the Colonial City for damages to what she describes as “archaeologically important ruins” in the renovation works. She says she has called for a stop to the works that are affecting the archaeological monuments in the area, but the builders have refused to do so. She says that preliminary archaeological studies should have been carried out and the project included hiring an archaeological consultant but the preventive measures have not been taken into account. She told Hoy newspaper that in works carried out at Calle Isabel la Catolica and later at Arzobispo Merino an important colonial era structure was uncovered that apparently formed part of the original city walls. She expressed regret at the fact that the works have continued without taking the concerns expressed by the Department of Monumental Heritage into account. She said the loss of any major find would be the fault of the renovation project.
