International warrant issued for Polish priest

Attorney General Francisco Dominguez Brito has ordered the placement of an international arrest order through the Interpol system for the arrest of Polish priest Wojciech Gil (Father Alberto Gil) on charges of rape and sexual abuse in Juncalito, the town in Santiago province where he served as the parish priest. The Wojciech Gil case is linked to that of his fellow Pole, former Papal Nuncio Wesolowski who is said to be at the Vatican after his conduct in the Dominican Republic was also questioned on grounds of child sexual abuse. Unlike Gil, Wesolowski is protected by diplomatic immunity. Dominguez Brito said that the Dominican authorities are cooperating with the Vatican to establish which court should hear the accusations against the Vatican’s former representative in the Dominican Republic.

The warrant for Gil’s arrest was issued in a communication to the Chief of Police, General Manuel Castro Castillo and the head of Interpol in the DR, Colonel Roberto Antonio Albino, No. 0957-2013. It is based on the fact that the priest left the country to avoid the process that was already underway to establish his involvement in the alleged crimes. Wojciech Gil’s passport number is ED0332230, as reported in El Caribe.

Dominguez Brito said that the Dominican authorities are in contact with judicial authorities in Poland. He said that a case would be opened in Poland to look into cases that occurred in the Dominican Republic but that there is also proof that Gil was in possession of child pornography involving minors of other nationalities.

As reported in El Caribe, Dominguez Brito said that his office would “do everything possible” to ensure that father Alberto Gil is judged and punished in the country “for the crimes he committed.”
