New rules for civil registry use

The Central Electoral Board (JCE) published a new ruling today, Monday September 30 that makes transparent the process of information provision from the civil registry in the Dominican Republic. The ruling is based on the judgment of the Constitutional Court No. TC/0062/13. It sets the norms for the private and government entities that have access to the processed matrix data contained in the cedulas, or local identity cards. Listin Diario reports that the ruling was issued following complaints that the information was being used for telemarketing.

As reported, Roberto Rosario Marquez said that the ruling establishes that only names, civil status, date and place of birth, status of the ID, photo and signature will be provided.

The JCE will receive RD$50,000 to RD$150,000 for providing a link to an institution, and monthly quotas of RD$15,000 to RD$15,000 are established, in addition to RD$100 and RD$50 per consultation.

The JCE says that it will continue to provide the voter registry to political parties for their use as a working document and that this information may not be given to third parties.
