Doctors at 168 hospitals nationwide announced a strike starting at 6am this morning, Monday September 30. The strike will affect public hospitals and medical centers under the governmental Dominican Institute of Social Security.
The strike comes in response to the Minister of Economy, Planning and Development who said in the 2014 budget, soon to be submitted to Congress, there is no money for raises in the public health sector. The budget was recently approved by the Council of Ministers.
Doctors are only providing emergency services through Thursday when services will be restored.
The president of the Dominican Medical Association (CMD) had announced the strike on Friday 27 September.
