Doctors’ strike affects thousands

The first day of the 72-hour strike called by the Dominican Medical Association (CMD) yesterday, Monday 30 September, left thousands of patients unable to have consultations. The Ministry of Public Health has called on the strike leaders to engage in talks, reminding them that they still had not closed the door to the possibility of a salary increase.

The suspension of consultation affected patients at the main public hospitals although emergency services were operating. Those new model hospitals and the self-managed centers delivered a normal service and included Ney Arias Lora, Reynaldo Almanzar, the Center for Cardio-Neuro Ophthalmology and Transplants (Cecanot) and Marcelino Velez Santana or Herrera.

Other hospitals such as Robert Reid Cabral children’s hospital, Dario Contreras, Luis Eduardo Aybar, Francisco Moscoso Puello, San Lorenzo de Los Mina and Nuestra Senora de La Altagracia Maternity hospital only dealt with emergencies and critical patients.

The strike started yesterday, Monday 30 September and is due to finish on Thursday at 8am.
