Time to renew vehicle tax

The Tax Office (DGII) will start to issue the vehicle taxations stickers (marbetes) today, Tuesday 1 October. The sticker renewal period runs until noon on December 31. They can be renewed at around 700 locations throughout the country.

Around a million vehicle owners are expected to purchase the stickers, generating RD$1.58 billion for the government.

All vehicles registered in 2008 and before will pay RD$1,200, whereas vehicles from 2009 to date will pay RD$2,200.

Deputy director of tax collection Tony Henriquez and Virginia Gomez, in charge of the Motor Vehicle Department made the announcement at the DGII head office yesterday, Monday 30 September. They are advising people to renew as soon as possible to avoid long queues and fines. They said that they had decided to change the renewal timeframe to the last three months of the year as it coincides with the period when employees receive their thirteenth month salary and bonuses from work. They also said that the new stickers have strict security measures in place to prevent forgeries with an embedded Datamatrix code that can be checked.
