Violence at university in San Francisco

One of the young men who was expelled by the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) and later cleared by the Upper Administrative Court (TSA) who said he should be reinstated as a student has denied that the students who were suspended at the same time as him were involved in an incident in San Francisco de Macoris last Saturday, 28 September where four people were injured.

According to Roberto Sanchez, only one of the students who had been expelled was present when several armed people attacked members of the University Council whilst they were in session at the North Eastern Regional Center (CURNE) although the Rector, Mateo Aquino Febrillet has accused them of being the same people.

Preliminary reports said that the Rector and the rest of the authorities from the UASD had to be escorted by the National Police until they were outside the city of San Francisco de Macoris.

The rector described the events as “an attempted kidnapping” by members of the Amin Abel Hasbun Student Front (Felabel).

The names of those injured have not been released but it is thought that three were UASD employees and one was a cameraman from Telemicro, Channel 5.

Classes have been suspended today, Tuesday 1 October to prevent any more violent protests.
