Following the introduction of the new Armed Forces Law, presented yesterday, Tuesday 1 October by Admiral Sigfrido Pared Perez, the Armed Forces will now be called the Ministry of Defense, the Navy will be called the Dominican Republic Navy, the National Army the Dominican Republic Army, and the Dominican Air Force will be called the Air Force of the Dominican Republic.
The new law establishes that promotions will be based on hierarchy and performance evaluations.
During a ceremony at the Ministry of Defense, the Admiral gave a long explanation about the new law and at the same time announced how the changes would be made.
The event was attended by all of the Major Generals, officers, Admirals and senior officials from the Ministry as well as Senators Carlos Castillo, president of the Senate Defense Committee and Adriano Sanchez Roa, plus Secretary and Deputy Elias Serulle.
Armed Forces Reform and Moderation Committee chairman Colonel Carlos Rafael Paulino Rojas said that they would set up several committees to draw up the rules for applying the new law and that a workshop would be held to explain how it should operate around the country.
As reported, the Armed Forces have a six-year timeframe to fully implement the legislation.
