Middle school eliminated

The National Education Council (CNE) has modified the structure of the Dominican Republic’s education system. From now on, primary school will be grades 1-6 and secondary education will be considered to be grades 7 through 12. During Tuesday’s session, chaired by Minister Carlos Amarante Baret, the council decided to divide the schooling according to developmental criteria and age. As a result the primary level will be for children from 6 to 12 and the secondary level will be for children and adolescents from 13 to 18.

The council also agreed to continue with the revision of the curriculum at both primary and secondary levels. The decision means that when comparing performance of Dominican students they can be grouped inline with more common international pre-school, elementary and secondary standards.
