Francisco Javier Occis Reyes, a Catholic priest who is in preventive custody for sexual abuse of a minor, has given the Dominican judicial authorities names of other alleged pedophile priests. Interviewed by Nuria Piera, the Catholic deacon who has been under arrest in San Pedro de Macoris since 24 June said he has already revealed the names of people involved in similar cases. Before releasing the names, he entered into a plea bargain with the judicial authorities in return for his cooperation “because the matter is very delicate.” He says that he has knowledge of many cases, but that many people in the Church are aware of themm too, he said during the TV show.
He said as well as homosexual priests who have relationships with adults there are also some who prey on children. He said many of them participate in public events. He explained that the high number of cases was because seminaries accepted people with these tendencies and that the ones who did not have these tendencies “degenerated” while in the seminary. He said many bishops took advantage of the young seminarians’ economic vulnerabilities.
“When they enter the seminary, the young men degenerate and if you don’t speak to anyone and hide it, it makes things worse,” said Occis Reyes, who entered the seminary when he was 14 years old, concluded his studies and was in his pastoral year at the time of his arrest.
“Besides being a pedophile, Josef Wesolowski (the former papal nuncio) is a drug addict and alcoholic,” said Occis Reyes. He said he had sex with the diplomat in the Vatican Embassy itself. Reyes was supposedly in the company of Wesolowski when arrested on charges of sexual abuse, as reported in El Caribe.
