The Vatican has appointed Nigerian-born Archbishop Jude Thaddeus Okolo, 57, as Vatican nuncio to the Dominican Republic and apostolic delegate for Puerto Rico, in replacement of disgraced former papal nuncio Josef Wesolowski, now under investigation for sex abuse. Wesolowski was recalled to Rome on 21 August after the allegations were about to be revealed by the Dominican press.
At the time of his appointment, Okolo had served as apostolic nuncio to the Central African Republic and Chad since 2008. The new Vatican ambassador has worked in Sri Lanka, Haiti, Switzerland, Czech Republic and Australia. He speaks English, French, Italian, German, Spanish and Czech.
