Groups asking for bigger share of the 2014 budget

Directors and employees from several municipal councils throughout the country marched to the Congress building yesterday, Tuesday 8 October to ask legislators to modify the 2014 budget to give them a greater share.

Many were dressed in black and some carried placards demanding that the government comply with Law 176-07 that establishes that 10% of the National Budget should be allocated to the municipalities.

Once they arrived outside the Congress building they discovered they were not alone, as there was another demonstration there by farmers who were also asking that the budget include a pay rise for them, as their salaries had not increased since 1998. Following a meeting with a Congressional representative, the president of the Dominican Federation of Municipal Districts (Fedodim), Andres Julio Ricardo, said that it was unfair that this sector should be marginalized by the Budget when it had to work daily in the communities solving the local problems.
