Major drug haul in Salinas

The National Drug Control Agency (DNCD) has confiscated 1,060 packets of cocaine weighing 1,200 kilos on Punta Salinas beach in Peravia province (Bani). The DNCD says the shipment has market value of US$15 million, as reported in Hoy. This is the largest shipment seized since Major General Julio Cesar Souffront was appointed president of the DNCD.

The drugs were seized by DNCD agents, the Navy and other anti-narcotic organizations. Three men from Venezuela, Colombia and the Dominican Republic were arrested. They were on board a speedboat intercepted 14 nautical miles off sea. They are suspected of belonging to an international drug-dealing network operating in the country.

A DNCD spokesman said they were on the lookout for other suspects in the area.

Punta Salinas has been used for unloading drugs by a series of international drug dealing gangs for many years because it is surrounded by trees and mangroves, making it easy for illegal boats to enter and subsequently transport drugs to Santo Domingo.
