Samana is losing its cruise ships

Royal Caribbean could follow Norwegian Cruise Line in cutting the port destination from its itineraries. The large cruise ships have to use offshore mooring points due to the lack of port facilities. A proposal to build a cruise ship port has met with resistance from local business owners and this is said to be one of the main reasons for the decision. As reported in Hoy, the Samana Taxi Drivers Association argues that the cruise ship tourism is what moves the town’s economy. The association estimates that RD$1 million in revenue flows through the town with the arrival of each of the giant ships. For the 2011-2012 season, around 85,000 cruise ship tourists visited Samana, most on board Norwegian and Royal Caribbean line ships.
