In an apparent attempt to murder the deputy mayor of La Romana, Maritza Suero, two people entered the town hall and fired several shots yesterday, Monday 14 October.
Suero was appointed Mayor after the elected mayor Tony Adames was suspended by the council for having several outstanding legal cases against him, including issuing checks without funds. She said that she was terrified for her life, and had her security detail not intervened she would have been killed.
Suero said she was about to throw herself out of the window when help arrived, but if this is what it means to be an interim mayor for the city of La Romana, that she would rather resign. She blamed the suspended mayor, Tony Adames and PRSC party legislator Pedro Botello for the event as the latter allegedly threatened to take over the city hall if the Councilors did not reinstate the mayor.
Witnesses said that the two men came into the Town Hall completely drunk and went to the Mayor’s office on the second floor, took a shotgun away from a municipal policeman and minutes later shots were heard together with the sound of breaking glass.
A lawyer, said to be a member of the Juventud Reformista movement and identified as Carlos Divanna, is being held as one of the people responsible for the crime.
