A court in Bonao has acquitted Alberto Zacarias Cordero, a Roman Catholic priest, of charges of sexual aggression against a young girl.
The judges, Nelson Antonio Langumas Guzman, Pedro Julio Cornelio Esquea and Elizabeth Amalia Lopez took into account the evidence from a handwriting expert from the National Institute of Forensic Science (Inacif) in Santiago that established that incriminating letters had been written by the accuser and not the priest. Zacarias Cordero said that he was at peace with God, the people and his conscience, as he knew he was innocent of the charges.
As the sentence was read out, a crowd inside and outside the court began to shout with joy, leading to a pause in proceedings for a few minutes.
