Yesterday, Monday 14 October, the president of the Alianza Popular party, Guillermo Moreno, asked the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies to eliminate the special funds granted to legislators better known as the “barrilito” (little barrel) or “cofrecito” (little chest), supposedly for social work but widely used to buy political loyalty.
He said that the money should instead be used to help single and unemployed mothers.
He handed a letter to the presidents of both the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies where he says that the legislators were violating the Constitution when awarding themselves funds for their chosen social work in the 2014 National Budget.
