The level of government borrowing in 2013 is ten times what it was in 2003. While in 2003 financing included in the 2003 budget totaled RD$13.48 billion, in the budget the government is sending to Congress the amount is now 14 times that sum. The government is requesting RD$189.26 billion in financing. This is up from last year’s RD$146.46 billion.
“We have been accumulating debt, both domestic as foreign, to finance the deficits that between 2008 and 2011 have averaged RD$54 billion, and in 2012 increased to a RD$154 billion, according to the Central Bank. And this year it will be around RD$70 billion and all this is adding on as public debt,” said economist Miguel Collado.
