The Haitian wall

Minister of Defense Sigfrido Pared Perez says that the wall being built by Haitian authorities on the border with the Dominican Republic will not represent any inconvenience for Dominican military. He said Haiti is within its rights to erect a wall as part of their efforts to charge more taxes. “The most important thing for us is to have effective controls and infrastructure and to improve the ones that are working,” he said. He said that all countries have the right to raise walls, gates or to increase the number of men working on the border. He said that Haiti insists on having a border unit and that is beneficial for the country. Pared mentioned the existence of the Specialized Border Corps (CESFRONT) on the Dominican side, with whom Haiti can coordinate border control. He said that both countries share responsibility for controlling the border and that CESFRONT is coordinating with Haitian authorities to recover vehicles, merchandise and rescue people who have been kidnapped on both sides of the border.

Several media outlets recently commented that the Dominican government should help Haiti build more sections of the wall.
